Intentionally Fallacy by Wimsatt and Beardsley

INTENTIONAL FALLACY BY W.K.WIMSATT

W.K.Wimsatt

William Kurtz Wimsatt was a prominent member of Yale University's English department from 1939 to 1975, becoming a Sterling Professor of English in 1974. He was deeply involved in Catholic affairs and received numerous awards and honorary degrees. Born in Washington, D.C., Wimsatt was educated at Georgetown and Yale, where he earned his doctorate in English in 1939. He specialized in eighteenth-century literature and spent his entire teaching career at Yale.

Wimsatt authored several notable works, including "The Prose Style of Samuel Johnson" (1941) and "The Portraits of Alexander Pope" (1965). He is best known for co-authoring "The Verbal Icon" (1954) with Monroe C. Beardsley, introducing the concepts of "intentional fallacy" and "affective fallacy" central to New Criticism. Married to Margaret Elizabeth Hecht in 1944, Wimsatt had two children and enjoyed hobbies like painting and chess. He passed away in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1975.

Throughout his career, Wimsatt advanced through academic ranks at Yale and held various prestigious positions. He was active in many scholarly organizations and contributed significantly to literary criticism and theory. Wimsatt received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and honorary degrees from several universities. He was also elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

In addition to his work on eighteenth-century literature, Wimsatt wrote on various subjects, including Edgar Allan Poe and T.S. Eliot, and made significant contributions to the study of prosody and comedy. He edited and co-edited several important literary works and collections of essays.

William Kurtz Wimsatt passed away from a heart attack on December 17, 1975.

Monroe Beardsley

Monroe C. Beardsley was a significant figure in philosophy, especially known for his work in aesthetics, the study of beauty and art. His book "Aesthetics: Problems in the Philosophy of Criticism" from 1958 was a big deal because it organized aesthetics in a new way. Beardsley had two main ideas: "metacriticism," which is analyzing art criticism, and "aestheticism," which says that only aesthetic qualities like beauty and harmony matter in art criticism.

He believed that art is valuable because it gives us valuable experiences. He thought these experiences, called "aesthetic experiences," are different from ordinary ones, like seeing a beautiful painting. Beardsley argued that the value of art comes from its ability to give us these special experiences. He said there are principles in art criticism that can help us understand what makes art valuable.

He didn't think the artist's intentions matter when we're talking about the value of art. He thought we should focus only on the art itself, not what the artist meant by it. Overall, Beardsley's ideas had a big impact on how people think about art and its value, even though some of his arguments are still debated today.

THE INTENTIONAL FALLACY

The intentional fallacy is the idea that a reader cannot evaluate a literary work properly by trying to assume the author's intentions in their writing. Authors William K. Wimsatt and Monroe Beardsley explore this idea in their 1946 article "The Intentional Fallacy." They originally discuss the concept in terms of poetry; however, it can be applied to all forms of art. For example, if a painter were to paint what they intended to be a scene from the countryside with no hidden meaning, the people who are viewing the painting cannot make assumptions about what the painting means based on the painter's original intent. Another point worth noting is the use of the word "intentional" itself. To do something "intentionally" implies that one has specific ideas about how and why they will complete that task.

AUTHOR'S INTENT

Author's intent refers to the author's ideas about how their work should be perceived and evaluated. When someone asks what an author meant about something in a work of art, they are asking about the author's intent. Author's intent can easily be misunderstood by an audience. An example is an author composing a piece about the dangers of smoking. Their intent is to persuade their audience to abstain from cigarettes, but the tone used comes across as comical to their readers. While their intent is to persuade readers not to smoke, the readers perceive the writing as entertaining and are therefore amused by the piece. In this example, the author's original intentions are not expressed.

AUTHORIAL DEFINITION

Authorial definition is the concept that an author is the only one who can truly define the meaning of their work. Additionally, anyone who attempts to evaluate the work through a lens other than the authorial definition is incorrect in their perception of the work. This concept is controversial for many reasons. Firstly, there is always plenty of room for an audience to misinterpret what an author actually means in their writing, such as not understanding an author's use of irony or misinterpreting their tone. Additionally, this concept fails to consider that an author may not fully understand why they created their work in the first place. Even if they do fully understand, it is impossible for their audience to ever truly understand what they went through in order to create their work. This is because their audience does not have the author's exact experiences. In this way, the authorial definition can be a faulty lens through which to examine an author's work.

Wimsatt and Beardsley's "The Intentional Fallacy": Summary

"The Intentional Fallacy" is an article authored and published in 1946 by William K. Wimsatt and Monroe C. Beardsley. Its premise is that readers cannot and should not attempt to evaluate an author's work through the author's intentions when reading literature, specifically poetry. Wimsatt and Beardsley begin with five propositions to introduce readers to this concept. The first proposition states that poetry does not come into existence by accident, but by an author's intention. The second claims that readers have no way of obtaining a reliable answer to the question of what an author meant by their poem because if the author succeeded in their writing, the poem itself is the answer. The third claims that poetry has meaning through the fact that it exists in the first place, and it needs no meaning outside of simply being. The fourth states that readers can find personal meaning in relating to a poem, but readers should now attribute their personal feelings about a poem to what the author intended for the poem. Finally, the fifth proposition explains that if an author is able to revise their work and better achieve their original intention, this means that what they thought was their original intention was not truly their original intention.

Wimsatt and Beardsley further explain that poetry succeeds because all irrelevant information has been filtered out, leaving only what is most important. They claim that a poem's meaning is always personal to its author, so readers may be able to relate to universal concepts and experiences that inspire the poetry, but they will never fully know the specific experience of the author who created the poetry. This means that by default, they cannot know the author's intent. If an author is able to revise their work to better achieve their original intent, it simply means that their original intention was not their true intention.

Wimsatt and Beardsley go on to state that poetry belongs to neither the author nor the reader once the author has written it. They claim that the concepts in the poetry are subject to public criticism and that the author has no ownership of those concepts outside of the actual poem itself. In this way, they defend their argument that an author's original intentions cannot and should not be considered when readers are evaluating the author's work.

Thank you.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Q - what is The Significance of The Title "Heart Of Darkness? "

This novel is about Marlow's experience in the Congo. As soon as he joins the Company as a steamboat pilot, he is eager to meet Kurtz. Upon reaching the Outer Station, he witnesses the Company's savageness towards the native people, who are working as slaves. This reality is completely contrary to Marlow's initial perceptions of the Company and its goals. Eventually, he arrives at the Company's Inner Station where Kurtz resides. There, he sees the horrifying sight of native people's heads impaled on spears around the station.

This experience teaches Marlow about the "heart of darkness" present in all men. While some, like Marlow, manage to suppress the evil within, others, like Kurtz, succumb to it.

Q - what are The Major Themes of Novel " Heart Of Darkness? "

'Heart of Darkness'  explores issues related to British imperialism in the 19th century, highlighting the "hypocrisy of imperialism" and the madness it incites.

Evil : This is one of the central themes, exemplified by Kurtz and his brutal treatment of the native people.

Darkness : As a significant theme, it is well represented throughout the novella. The depiction of Congo, Africa, and Brussels is dark and foreboding. Despite the bright sunshine, the surroundings remain gloomy and oppressive.

Hypocrisy of Imperialism : The Company conceals its cruel intentions behind a facade, claiming to be the saviors of the native people. This false benevolence is a clear display of hypocrisy.

King Lear | Thinking Task

This blog task is a thinking activity on Shakespeare's famous play King Lear.

Q - Choose any Play/Tragedy/Novel/Comedy of William Shakespeare. Re-Create it if Was Written in 2022.

William Shakespeare wrote many plays, but one of my favorites is "King Lear." However, I am not fond of its tragic climax. I would like to reimagine the character of King Lear as if he lived in 2022.

King Lear is the hero of the play, yet he behaves rashly and irresponsibly. He is blind and unfair as a father, as seen in his treatment of Cordelia, which was wrong. He failed as a ruler, and although he later realizes his mistakes, it is too late. If the play took place in 2022, Lear would recognize his folly sooner, and unnecessary deaths could be avoided.

I wouldn't save Regan and Goneril, as they were evil and deserve to be punished. However, Edmund could use a telephone to reverse his orders to kill Cordelia and Lear, rather than relying on a human messenger. This way, they wouldn't have to die and could live peacefully after the tragedy they endured.

Q - if you Have to Write or direct a Play Which Human Characteristics you will put into your Characters

If I were to direct a play, I would design my main character to be smart, intellectual, and funny. I believe that without humor, books lose their enjoyment. Additionally, the character should be kind and gentle towards everyone.

Q - Among Three Unities Shakespeare Follows Unity of Action. How Far fo You agree With This? Give Reasons.

The three unities are Time, Place, and Action. Shakespeare primarily adhered to the unity of Action, which often results in a more engaging and cohesive drama. The unity of Action is easier to adopt, whereas the unities of Time and Place can be challenging or even impossible to implement effectively.

Unity of Time

This principle suggests that a play should present events that occur within a 24-hour period, with the time span of the play ideally matching the actual time of its performance. Due to this limitation, many writers, including Shakespeare, did not adhere to this unity. Even if a play manages to incorporate this unity, it is unlikely to gain much popularity due to its restrictive nature.

Unity of Place

According to this principle, the play should take place in a single location, such as one room or square. This can be inconvenient for writers, as it restricts the ability to change scenes. For instance, if I were writing a play about a war between two nations, it would be impossible to maintain the unity of Place. The play would need to depict both the battlefields and the situations within the nations, including injured soldiers.

Thus, most writers, including Shakespeare, do not follow the unities of Time and Place. They focus on the unity of Action, as every play has a plot with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

A Baby Running Barefoot | D. H. Lawrence

This Blog is Based on our interpretation of the poem "baby running barefoot" By D.H. Lawrence

D.H.LAWRENCE

David Herbert Lawrence was an English writer, novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist. His modernist works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. His best-known novels such as sons and lovers, the rainbow, women in love, and lady Chatterlay's lover were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of sexuality and use of explicit language.

In the first line, the poet describes a baby running barefoot across the grass, When the baby runs barefoot, it is a sight that soothes the eyes. The poet compares the baby's playful movements to the song of a robin. Just as the robin's song captivates its listeners, the sight of the baby running barefoot attracts everyone, making it hard to look away. Watching a child play in a meadow fills one with joy.

The poet likens the baby's white feet to two white butterflies, scattered in a "cup of flowers." He compares the grass to a cup of flowers and the baby's feet to white butterflies that flutter about, never staying in one place, much like the baby's playful movements.

The poet wants the baby to wander around him like a wind shadow over water, enjoying the child's innocence. Sometimes, we don't get to enjoy our own childhood fully, and when we see a little baby playing, we find joy and innocence in their actions. Watching them play not only soothes our eyes but also comforts our soul. The poet wishes the baby would stand on his knee, comparing her tiny bare feet to "swirling birds" and "pink peony flowers." The baby's feet are cool like syringa and soft and delicate like young pink peony flowers.

In the poem, the poet describes not only the baby's beauty but also her childlike innocence.

Thank you.

NILAMBAUG PALACE VISIT

Hello everyone,

17th Nov, 2023.

Few days back in our college both T.Y. and S.Y. English students had visited Psychological Painting Exhibition which was held at the 'Nilam Baug Palace'. And it was relevant to our current unit "THE BLACK CAT" by EDGAR ALLAN POE which was based on some psychological aspects.

I had good experience but I hardly understood one or two of them. Paintings were made by Digvijay Sir. Then, sir assist us to understood the paintings. He told us that the paintings were totally based upon the Psychological Interpretation of his Subconscious Mind.

Above painting is about a man who is trying to break his shell and wants to evolve and develop himself through the self awakening. Most of the paintings were based upon inner sexuality of men and women. Some of them were upon Adam and Eve, which Indicate the evolution of human being.

At the end we had a group photo and took Leave
With such a new Experience.

Blood Donation Camp | 2023

  GREETINGS,

" BLOOD DONATION CAMP" was carried in our R.R MONPARA  ARTs college on 11th Jan, 2023. And best thing about that it was managed by Arts students and volunteers who are on their Feet throughout the whole camp to help.

It's a best example of what 'Team Work' can do. It was a truly a new experience for me. Though initially I was little bit scared but Vipul sir Inspired us and help us to understand the perks of blood donation.
I had felt joyous to take initiative while everyone is scared to be the first one to donate the blood. Many teachers and student participated and made this Camp a Huge Success with 83 blood donors. It could be more but some of the students were not eligible for it because of low HB levels and myths regarding to the blood donation. We hope that more and more people would understand the necessity of blood donation over time and take part enthusiastically.

It was indeed a good experience for me and I will look forward for such future opportunities for blood donation.

                                        WHEN YOU DONATE BLOOD."

The "Green" Earth | Tree Plantation

 SALUTATIONS,

Today, April 29, 2023, me and my cousins planted a tree. A bel patra tree (stone apple). Which is considered a holy tree, and it's used as an offering to Lord Shiva. It takes a lot of effort, but at the end, when you see that little tree planted in your front yard, you feel like your efforts are worth it. You feel joy when you see a fully grown tree that you've nurtured for so long. The optimal time for tree planting is a month prior to the monsoon, though one can plant trees anytime. It is necessary to educate your little brothers and sisters about the importance of tree planting from a young age. This tree planting activity was supposed to be done during our college period, but unfortunately, it wasn't possible at that time, so I did it during my vacation time.

I reckon it is the duty of every person on earth to plant at least one tree a year. It would make our planet more green and more living. Nowadays, the normal temperature during the summer is 40° to 45°C, and the time is near when the temperature will reach 50°C as well. We all should take the initiative to plant trees because trees are very helpful in diminishing the level of global warming and carbon monoxide, which are the principal factors causing high temperatures. We see a few birds around us or in the gardens as well, especially sparrows. These trees are home to the birds. We are obliged to help them build their nests by planting more trees.

Trees are the very root of our existence. There is no living thing without trees. therefore, we should take part enthusiastically in tree planting.

I am sincerely thankful to Vipul sir and Vaidehi ma'am for making us aware of tree planting.

               ðŸŒ³"PLANT A GREEN TREE,

                                           AND LIVE YOUNGER"🌳
