A Baby Running Barefoot | D. H. Lawrence

This Blog is Based on our interpretation of the poem "baby running barefoot" By D.H. Lawrence

D.H.LAWRENCE

David Herbert Lawrence was an English writer, novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist. His modernist works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. His best-known novels such as sons and lovers, the rainbow, women in love, and lady Chatterlay's lover were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of sexuality and use of explicit language.

In the first line, the poet describes a baby running barefoot across the grass, When the baby runs barefoot, it is a sight that soothes the eyes. The poet compares the baby's playful movements to the song of a robin. Just as the robin's song captivates its listeners, the sight of the baby running barefoot attracts everyone, making it hard to look away. Watching a child play in a meadow fills one with joy.

The poet likens the baby's white feet to two white butterflies, scattered in a "cup of flowers." He compares the grass to a cup of flowers and the baby's feet to white butterflies that flutter about, never staying in one place, much like the baby's playful movements.

The poet wants the baby to wander around him like a wind shadow over water, enjoying the child's innocence. Sometimes, we don't get to enjoy our own childhood fully, and when we see a little baby playing, we find joy and innocence in their actions. Watching them play not only soothes our eyes but also comforts our soul. The poet wishes the baby would stand on his knee, comparing her tiny bare feet to "swirling birds" and "pink peony flowers." The baby's feet are cool like syringa and soft and delicate like young pink peony flowers.

In the poem, the poet describes not only the baby's beauty but also her childlike innocence.

Thank you.
